A Santos Story: Estágio Dois (Stage Two)

Copa do Brasil

Santos began their Copa do Brasil campaign in the 5th round, where they were drawn against Bahia. Santos defeated Bahia 4-1 on aggregate over the two legs. Jean Mota found a late equaliser to rescue a draw at home. Santos performed much better when it came to the second leg, beating Bahia three goals to nil at their stadium, with Eduardo Sasha coming off the bench for Kaio Jorge to net a brace and Tailson scoring the final goal of the tie.

Santos were drawn in the Copa do Brasil Quarter-Final against what many believe to be the strongest side in Brazil at this time, Flamengo. Flamengo certainly stepped up to that claim, beating Santos 4-1 comfortably, to reach the Copa do Brasil Semi-Final.

It was Grêmio in the end who won the Copa do Brasil, defeating Atlético Mineiro 3-2 over two legs in the Final. With this victory, Grêmio equalled Cruzeiro’s record of 6 Copa do Brasil trophies.

Campeonato Brasileirão Assai Série A

Brady’s Santos managed to win the Brasileirão on their first time of asking, finishing just 2 points ahead of second placed São Paulo, in what was a competitive title race throughout the season. Sport Recife, Bahia, Vasco & Atlético Goianiense were all relegated.

Santos have now won the Brasileirão on 9 occasions, just 1 Brasileirão behind record holders Palmeiras.

19-year-old Argentine’ Thiago Almada won the Brasileirão Award for “Best Foreign Player”. Almada scored 14 goals, provided 13 assists and had an average rating of 7.20 in his first season with Santos.

Santos Manager’ Joshua Brady was named Brasileirão Manager of the Year.

Copa CONMEBOL Libertadores

Santos were drawn in Group E along with Racing Club (Argentina), Olimpia (Paraguay) & Independiente del Valle (Ecuador).

Santos won Group E in devastating fashion, winning all six of their games and only conceding a single goal, leaving them with a goal difference of 19 from just six matches.

Santos have been drawn against Chilean side Universidad Católica in the Copa Libertadores Second Round.

Brasileirão Reserves League 1

Santos have competed a league double by winning the Reserves championship. Santos’ reserves finished with an incredible 104 points and a goal difference of 100. Second placed Flamengo finished 19 points behind Santos.
